Your first tango lesson is coming up soon? Finally, you give it a try. Bravo. That’s a wise decision to start with tango learning. Nothing to lose, you will only win. I give you here some useful tips how to prepare without spending much.
In case you will leave it again, you do not waste your money. Prepare yourself to have most benefits out of this precious time. Follow my 3 useful tips that will let you enjoy your first tango lesson even more.
My 3 useful tips:
1. The shoes
Before you go to the next dance shop and purchase shoes, possibly super high heels, keep it simple first, please. No need to rush. You do not need shoes for your first lesson!
meaning to say: no excuse to get started with your first tango lesson!
For the first lesson it will be fine to wear some comfortable sneakers with preferable leather sole. You can also use some old sneakers which are a bit worn-out. You might still have a pair in your wardrobe. Men will be fine with an elegant Tango shoe. This will last for long.
Now it is time to look for some dance shoes.
I suggest using latin dance shoes for the beginning. Latin dance shoes have less high and wider heels and therefore they provide a better balance. I do not recommend to choose shoes with more than 5 cm for the first couple of months.
2. The clothing:
Long pants for men…..please no shorts and a half or long sleeve shirt. You may wear a t-shirt as well. Always please bring 1 or 2 shirts for a change. Even the dance is not very dynamic in the beginning you will sweat a lot just by concentration. In tango we get very close with our partner and hygiene is a must.
Basic men outfit:
- shirt with sleeves ( 2 pcs)
- comfortable trousers
- sneakers or leather shoes
- aftershave and deodorant
- mints
Ladies wear a comfortable skirt in which she can move freely and a top with a long or half arm. I do not recommend tank tops for classes.
Basic women outfit:
- comfortable skirt
- top with sleeves
- comfortable latin dance shoes with a small heel
- baking soda or deodorant
- perfume and mints
3. Good smell
Good smell is compulsory. Please do not go directly after work to the dance class without having a shower before! Hygiene is a must. Nothing is worse than body odor. My personal advise is baking powder. A little bit under the armpits after showering will keep you safe the whole night…. I prefer baking powder over deodorants as it has no poisonous chemicals and is neutral in smell. It will not take away the fragrance of your favorite perfume. But Deodorants will do as well of course. Brush your teeth before class and bring some mints in any case.
Last but not least of my useful tips: put a big smile on your face and the evening is yours.
