Awareness for the surroundings – Tango Meditation Seminar 4

Taking notice about other people, the environment, nature, we are witnessing conflicting situations everywhere. How does this effect us? More important than the question who is right or wrong, is the way how we react. It’s about changing perspective and watch the situation from a different point of view. From here we will decide wisely and act with responsibility.

What does this all have to do with Tango? An example, how awareness for the surroundings is necessary on the dance floor, explains the topic very well.

We learn to dance in a ronda. On the dance floor we watch out for space, space for ourselves and for other couples, we respect the lines. The leader stays in eye contact with other couples, who might want to enter the dance floor. We keep our movements controlled , according to the space available and keep feet on the floor.

The reasons are easy to understand. Rules are there to guaranty a smooth flow of the circulating couples, same situation we find in road traffic.

Still, there are some people they don’t even care, they are busy only with themselves, not noticing others around and there it happens.

A couple bump into another one. Call it lack of discipline, I call it lack of awareness.

awareness for the surroundings

Change your perspective.

I don’t think it is about right or wrong. Both can have a totally different view and still be right.

It is about being captured in someones own ego and therefore not able to think flexible. People are not willing to leave someone’s point of view just to see how things look like from the other side.

Change your perspective from time to time because stubbornness and dogmatism lead to conflict in general, not only on the dance floor.

With awareness for the surroundings, we see and value situations differently.

Responsibility for your action.

In our every day life there are hundreds of moments, where we can apply the meaning of awareness .

Think of situations in the bus, in a shop, at work or in school. In any situation where we interact with other people, we shall be constantly reminded to be mindful and take our actions with responsibility .

And not only with people, even infrastructure, bus stops, public toilets etc. Carelessly thrown away rubbish and rioting we can find everywhere in our cities. Totally meaningless destruction, which does not bring benefits to anybody. This is an aspect too, to think about with awareness.

Furthermore, imagine how we treat nature. Think of the CO2 and plastic pollution, which brings our climate out of order, brings harm to all living creatures. Missing awareness leads to egoism and self-obsession and last but not least to self-destruction.

Building awareness for the surroundings on the dance floor, we realise positive feed back of others, and from here we bring it into our overall interpersonal “internatural” relationships.

By changing perspective we will find the right decision to act with responsibility. We become more responsive to awareness for our surroundings.
